NPO Green Forum intends to plant a total of 100 million broadleaf and evergreen trees in Laos by 2020. The species of evergreen called Fokienia formoensis (May Long Leng in Lao) will account for the largest number of trees planted.
Conversion of forest to agricultural land has caused serious deforestation in Laos. We are aiming to increase the amount of forested areas by making it possible to develop income-producing businesses that use natural resources derived from the forest. Our activities will cover the six areas of environment, energy, health, education, life materials and food production.

1.Environment
The project activities of afforestation are plantation for the environment and plantation for livelihood improvement. The main purpose of afforestation is the plantation of Fokienia formoensis.
1-1 Environmental afforestation project
NGO G.F. will support planting 30 million seedlings (about 15,000 ha) by the year 2020, mainly Fokienia formoensis. The first 5 years from 2008 to 2012 will be a preparation period. We will support planting 3 million seedlings (about 1,500 ha) as a target.
1-2. Plantation for livelihood improvement project
NGO G.F. will plant 70 million seedlings (about 35,000 ha) for livelihood improvement based on mixed forest by the year 2020. The purpose will be to yield monetary revenues, in order to improve profit margins from the forest. Fruit orchards will also be included in this objective.
1-3. Carbon credit calculation project
Accurate calculations are necessary to achieve U.N. recognition in terms of carbon credits for afforestation in Laos. Green Forum will support obtaining data for carbon credit calculation and identifying potential purchasing enterprises in Japan.
2.Energy
Hydropower is one of the most important export industries in Laos, but most villages in remote areas lack enough electricity supplies. Small hydropower plants in a self-support system are indispensable to revitalizing the villages. Green Forum will contribute to the production of natural energy supplies that make the best use of geographic characteristics.
2-1 Solar panel installation project
We will support installation of solar panels on the roofs of private and public buildings, especially on the roofs of the schools which are to be constructed.
2-2 Small scale hydropower project
Laos is an exporting country of electric power. However, small-scale hydropower is still underdeveloped. We will contribute to the construction of small-scale hydropower plants so that the villages can sell extra electricity to the power companies in the future.
3.Sanitation
When we think about the environment, facilities for waterworks and sanitation are as indispensable as afforestation in Laos. However conventional water and sanitation systems, which require large-scale construction costs as well as maintenance costs, should be reexamined. We will study systems which might be better suited to the characteristics of Laos and which will contribute to daily convenience and living environments.
3-1 Waterworks installation project
We will support installation of waterworks facilities in the villages where people do not have such service at the present time. We will support planting and conservation of trees on sites where forests exist for water conservation, because different projects should support each other and have consistent objectives.
3-2 Sewage installation project
We will contribute to prevent river pollution by providing small systems which use microorganism-activated sludge procedures that forestall the occurrence of increased pollution due to population increases and urbanization.
4.Education
There are still villages without schools in Laos. We will contribute to construction of schoolhouses.
4-1 School forest and school construction project
We will support construction of 50 schools by 2020 in Laos. Our main purpose is afforestation around the elementary schools. Green Forum will support afforestation in cooperation with UNICEF and other related organizations.
5.Materials for Daily Life
We will assist people in villages to earn more cash by producing materials for daily life from mountain forests.
5-1 Plantation for charcoal production and kiln construction project
We will support plantation for charcoal production and kiln construction so that people in the villages can get more cash than now through forestry. Our target is to construct enough kilns to achieve production of 10,000 tons of charcoal a year by 2020.
5-2. Paper material development project
We will develop paper mills to produce products for Japanese paper and paper towels, for export to Japan.
6.Food
We will work together with villagers in Laos to develop new food products which could be new cash crops, replacing shifting cultivation fields with forest-derived crops. These food products can be sold in existing domestic markets but can also be exported to foreign countries.
6-1 Jam development project
We will support development of new types of jam made from fruit from existing forests.
6-2. Bottled Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP) project
We will support the development of bottled NTFP so that villagers can sell not only raw NTFP but also export them to foreign countries. The bottled NTFP can be a special Laotian health food.
6-3. Dairy product development project
We will support the development of a dairy industry by making the best use of geographic characteristics of Laos, where much of the land is at a high altitude and the temperature is lower than other south-east Asian countries. We will support production of a special brand of Lao dairy products.
6-4. Aquaculture project
We will support cultivation of river fish around the Mekong River and her branches. The main kind of fish could be catfish because this fish can be exported to the EU.
